Abstract
This article examines the evolution of Francophonie in the Maghreb, particularly in Morocco, within the context of language planning. While discussing the progressive reduction of the importance of French and the implementation of Arabization, the article argues that the French/Arabic conflict, particularly its ideological overtones, has affected the standing of the mother tongues (Tamazight and dialectal Arabic) and undermined the attainment of high-level education, which could contribute to the region's development.
